style sketch: Breakfast at Tiffany’s goes Goth

Style sketch of a loose black mini dress with short sleeves and a high collar, paired with Wraptillion's spiky chandelier Garland Earrings. Text on image reads: + sleek black mules + huge sunglasses (or cat eyeliner) + messy updo = Breakfast at Tiffany's goes Goth.

I’ve never really seen mini dresses as part of my personal style… but sketching out this floaty little black one is making me wonder if it could be! I always like something spiky and edgy to balance out a softer, sweeter look (the Garland Earrings here), and something sleek and modern (simple, classic black mule slides would do the trick for summer.) That took this style sketch in kind of a Mod + Goth direction, leading me to… Breakfast at Tiffany’s goes Goth! (I kind of love it.) So many possibilities… Classic wine nails, the Trellis Bracelet, cuban-heel stockings or a great ankle tattoo… Sometimes it’s so fun to play outside my personal style lane and try something new!

Inspired by this Shirred Mini Dress from Everlane, though I’d prefer shorter sleeves.

easy summer style sketch: 1 dress, 2 colors, 6 ways

Style sketch of Everlane's Luxe Cotton Side-Slit Tee Dress in brown and black, with 6 styles of Wraptillion's modern chainmail earrings.

Decisions, decisions… Sometimes I just can’t decide which outfit ideas inspire me most! Classic Circling earrings, or botanical-inspired Mechanical Garden chandeliers? Rich mahogany brown, or simple black? For this style sketch, I kept things simple with one cap-sleeve modern tee dress, in two easy-to-wear neutral colors (similar to Everlane’s Luxe Cotton Side-Slit Tee Dress)…and then went wild with earring choices! (Let’s not even start with shoes… I really think you could wear anything from sneakers to heels with these!)

try a new style #9: rainbow edition (aka how to wear rainbow like a grownup)

Photos of Wraptillion's modern linked circles earrings with rainbow glass, including the Cascading Rainbow Earrings, Alternating Rainbow Earrings, and Tripled Rainbow Earrings, with a pencil sketch of a scoop-neck tee. Text on image reads: modern rainbow style (aka how to wear rainbow like a grownup)

Wondering how to add a little rainbow to your modern outfit? It can feel like a big change when most of your wardrobe is neutrals like black, gray, navy, and camel! But it doesn’t have to be scary, even if you don’t have the style confidence to jump straight in. Here’s three small steps to get you started as you try out this new variation on your personal style. (And if you’re already rocking that chromatic jumpsuit, go straight to my rainbow collection!)

Missed my previous personal style explorations? See part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, and part 8!

  1. Change one accessory — a scarf, a pair of earrings, a necklace — from neutral to rainbow, keeping the rest of your outfit neutral. Pale rainbow (like my Small Circle Earrings above) are an easy swap, but feel free to go straight for the full spectrum here! Even statement pieces like my Cascading Rainbow Earrings won’t overshadow your mostly-neutral look. Try them and see!

2. Go monochromatic, but with a touch of rainbow: Now, take that same accessory (or a new one!) and try it with almost-neutrals like these style sketches in blues, black, and white. See how the rainbow brings out the contrast, but not overwhelmingly? (Remember, denim blue goes with everything — and if you’d rather test out your new style on a casual weekend or lunch with friends, jeans and a tee with rainbow earrings are a great way to start!)

3. Test it with everything: Now that you built up a little rainbow confidence, take your new fav colorful accessory and try it with the rest of your wardrobe! Set all those preconceived style notions aside, and just try it all on. Stop to take photos of the outfits you love. I bet some may surprise you! (I wouldn’t have thought of the rose pink top in the style sketch video above, but it totally works!) Have fun!
